We’re all a little too online these days. Between real estate apps, emails, texts, DMs, and the constant pull to post something “just to stay visible,” it’s easy to feel like your brain is stuck in notification mode 24/7.
But the truth? A little intentional unplugging can do wonders for your focus, your creativity, and your overall energy. And no, you don’t need to toss your phone in a drawer for a week. Detoxing can be as simple as adding in small, screen-free moments throughout your day.
Here are a few of my go-to ways to take a break from the scroll without falling off the face of the earth.
Start Your Morning Without Your Phone
Before diving into texts or emails, give yourself a quiet, screen-free start. Sip your coffee. Sit outside. Write in a journal. Play music. Stretch. Literally anything that doesn’t involve checking notifications the second you open your eyes.
Make One Activity a No-Screen Zone
Pick one thing you already do every day, eating lunch, walking the dog, doing your skincare, and commit to doing it without your phone. No scrolling, no background podcasts, no half-texting while you multitask. Just be in it. It’ll feel weird at first… then kind of amazing.
Delete an App (or Outsmart Yourself with One)
Sometimes you just need to break the loop. Try deleting the app that’s draining you (you know which one), even if it’s just for a day. Or, use a digital wellness app like Freedom, Forest, or Opal to block distracting apps during certain hours. Yes, you can literally install an app to help you not use other apps. Genius, right?
The goal isn’t restriction, it’s getting your attention back. The group chat can wait. Your brain deserves the break.
Rediscover Boredom (Yes, Really)
Remember being bored? It’s underrated. Let yourself zone out while doing dishes, driving, or waiting in line, without filling the space with a screen. You might be surprised what kind of ideas or clarity come up when your brain isn’t busy consuming.
Put Your Phone to Bed Early
Try setting a wind-down window where your phone goes away, like, in a different room, kind of away. Light a candle. Read a book. Do nothing. Let your mind ease into rest without one last scroll. You’ll sleep better, and your nervous system will thank you.
Romanticize the Offline Moments
Joy doesn’t need to be productive, postable, or part of your routine. It can just be. Try doing something simple and screen-free that’s purely for your own enjoyment, no agenda, no tracking, no multitasking. Bake something from scratch, even if it turns out messy. Grab a notebook and write whatever comes to mind. Put on a playlist you loved in high school and dance like you’re at your own private concert.
Or go for the kind of walk where you don’t check your phone once, not for directions, not for steps, not for a podcast. Just walk, notice the world around you, and let your brain breathe.
The point isn’t perfection, it’s presence! These little moments help you reconnect with yourself, no screen required.
Unplugging doesn’t have to be extreme to be effective. Just a few screen-free moments a day can shift your whole energy. So give yourself permission to not be available all the time.
The group text can wait. The DMs will still be there. You? You’ll feel way more like yourself.
xx, Farrah
