I’ve been working as an agent for many years now and I’ll be the first to tell you I love it. But everything isn’t perfect like you see on TV, the reality of working in real estate isn’t so shiny. If you’re considering a career working as a real estate agent and feel like it’s a good fit for you, I’d say go for it. But the key to succeeding in this industry? Having the right mindset. Real talk… mindset matters (in any job, but especially in real estate) so I’m laying out how to create a winning mindset in today’s blog post.
You guys know I’m no bullshit so here’s the reality: If you want to win in this industry and build a career as an agent, you’re going to need a lot of grit and determination. If you’re a current agent you know, starting out in the industry can be tough. You typically won’t see success overnight as a real estate agent, it’s something that takes time and takes a lot of focus. Since you’re not in a typical 9-5 setting or have someone telling you what to do all of the time, you have to be your own accountability partner. Basically, what you put in is what you’re going to get out of it! If you’re slacking off or are lazy, you’re not going to see results or success. It takes a lot of hard work and a strong strategy, but it also takes the right mindset to keep going.
I frequently talk about how important it is to be prepared, and how being uber-prepared was the strategy I used (and still do) when I first started out. Become your local real estate and market expert by learning and then sharing your knowledge. Once you become valuable, know and leverage your value. Use your skills and knowledge to your advantage to put yourself in a winning position, whether that be gaining new opportunities, networking and meeting important people, etc.
Own the value that you provide, and you’ll have a solid advantage over the competition. I think it is so important (especially as a female agent) to command respect and exude confidence. Don’t feel like you can do it? Fake it till you make it. The more you do it, the more you’ll actually start feeling it. I was so nervous when I first started out, and would literally rehearse what I would say at showings and practice possible questions in the car alone. The more I was prepared, the more confident I felt, and the days that I didn’t… I faked it. Be sure of yourself and your ability and the experience and ease as an agent will come with experience and time.
If you’re not finding success or are in a slump (we’ve all been there…) my biggest tip is to get inspired. There is nothing worse than feeling unmotivated and stuck in a negative mindset. A sure way that I found has helped me is by listening to podcasts, watching videos, or reading books from industry experts that fire me up. Find something, whether that be a content creator, an author, etc. that you connect with and can learn from, and do a deep dive into the knowledge they’re sharing. You never know what might spark something inside of you to keep going and push through!
At the end of the day, everyone is different, but the 3 strategies I discussed above are something that I always practice when I need a mindset refresh. Here’s a little reminder…
- Know and leverage your value
- Command respect and exude confidence
- Get inspired
Try out my strategies and also take the time to find your own! What works for me might not work for you, but I think it is so important to learn how YOU can get YOUR mind right. Mindset is everything in this business, so start thinking success and it will find you. A little manifestation, if you will. 😉
