If you’re thinking about becoming a real estate agent, or you’re just getting started, I want to give it to you straight: it’s not all glitz, glam, and open houses. There’s a lot more behind the scenes than people realize, and knowing what you’re really signing up for can save you a lot of headaches (and hair-pulling moments). So let’s clear the air: here’s what a real estate agent actually does, no filter.
You’re part detective, part therapist
Clients aren’t just buying or selling a house; they’re navigating one of the biggest decisions of their lives. You’ll need to listen closely, read between the lines, and help keep them calm when things get stressful. Emotional intelligence goes a long way here.
Negotiation is where the magic happens
Showings and listings are fun, but your real value comes in negotiating. Counteroffers, inspections, and appraisal surprises happen all the time, and how you handle them can make or break a deal. Being confident, calm, and prepared is key.
Paperwork will always be your constant companion
Contracts, disclosures, escrows… yeah, it’s a lot. Staying organized isn’t optional; it’s survival. If you like details, you’re in luck. If you don’t, well… time to make friends with spreadsheets!

Marketing and networking never stop
Even if you’re not selling luxury homes yet, you’ll quickly see that marketing yourself, your listings, and building relationships is ongoing. Social media isn’t a nice-to-have, it’s a tool, and relationships really do matter.
You’re basically on call 24/7
Clients don’t exactly follow business hours, and sometimes neither will you. Boundaries are important, but flexibility will be your friend. Being responsive can make all the difference in a deal.
Expect the unexpected
Homes, clients, lenders, inspections… something will always throw a wrench in the plan. Being solution-oriented and staying calm under pressure is what separates good agents from great ones!
At the end of the day, being a real estate agent is challenging, rewarding, and yes, sometimes glamorous, but mostly it’s about grit, patience, and helping people make smart decisions.
If you’re just starting out, my advice is simple: learn the business, stay organized, be kind but firm, and remember that your value isn’t just showing homes, it’s guiding people through one of the biggest decisions of their lives. You’ve got this!
xx, Farrah
