Let’s talk about something we all deal with at some point or another: stress. Whether it’s deadlines at work, juggling a million and one responsibilities, or just the daily grind, stress is a pretty regular part of life (unfortunately). Managing it effectively can make allllll the difference in your overall well-being and productivity, so I’m sharing a few techniques I use when I’m stressed out and sh*t is about to hit the fan.
Breathe Deeply (Seriously)
You’ve probably heard it a million times, but deep breathing really works. When stress hits, your body goes into “fight or flight” mode, which can make your breathing shallow and rapid. Taking a few minutes to practice deep breathing—inhale through your nose for a count of four, hold for a count of four, and exhale slowly through your mouth—can help calm your nervous system and clear your mind. The next time you’re feeling overwhelmed, try it out. There are also so many apps out there that can lead you through breathing exercises and meditations.
Move Your Body
Speaking of exercise… it’s so important to move your body. Physical activity releases endorphins, which are your body’s natural mood lifters. You don’t need to do anything crazy, even a 20-minute walk makes a difference! I’ve also been trying to find new ways to get some movement in that doesn’t feel like exercise, and for me, that’s been tennis. It’s something I used to do when I was younger and I have enjoyed getting back into it so much. It doesn’t matter what it is, just get moving.
Manage Your Time
Feeling overwhelmed often comes down to feeling like there’s not enough time in the day. Pretty much what I deal with on a weekly basis! What’s always helpful for me is making a to-do list and prioritizing my tasks to most important/HAS to get done to something I need to do but the world won’t end if it doesn’t happen. Use a digital calendar, project management apps, or a good old-fashioned planner to keep track of deadlines and commitments.
Connect With Others
Sometimes, talking it out can make a world of difference! Don’t be afraid to reach out to family or friends when you’re feeling stressed. They can provide a fresh perspective and it’s always a nice feeling to have emotional support and validation.
Set and Maintain Boundaries
It’s easy to overcommit when you’re trying to please everyone, but setting boundaries is crucial for managing stress. Learn to say no when necessary and don’t be afraid to delegate tasks. Your well-being is important, and it’s okay to prioritize your needs!
Prioritize Self Care
Make time for activities that bring you joy and relaxation, whether that’s reading a book, taking a bath, or enjoying a hobby. Regular self-care can recharge your mental and physical energy and help you manage stress. Self care is different for everyone, so find what works for you and make it happen!
Seek Professional Help if Needed
We can’t always do it on our own… and that’s OKAY. Therapy is such a wonderful tool for stress and anxiety and makes such a difference in not only navigating your emotions but also learning tools to make things better. Ask friends for a referral or do your research to find the right therapist for you.
