In the craziness of today’s digital age, where our smartphones are glued to our hands and notifications ping at us at all hours, finding a balance between staying connected and unplugging can feel basically impossible. As someone who takes her work seriously and wants to perform as well as I possibly can for my clients, I’ve come to appreciate the importance of setting boundaries and managing my screen time effectively. Today we’re chatting a few strategies that have helped me manage my screentime, set some tech boundaries, and basically navigate everything digital without losing my shit.
Let’s be honest – being on-call 24/7 isn’t sustainable. Sure, quick responses are crucial in our line of work, but constantly staring at screens can kill our energy and blur the lines between work and downtime. It’s all too easy to find yourself scrolling through property listings when you should be winding down for the night. I think we’ve all been there.
Plus, studies suggest that too much screen time can disrupt sleep patterns, increase anxiety, and spike stress levels – not exactly ideal for staying on it during those crucial client meetings.
Strategies for Unplugging
Set Clear Boundaries
Designate specific times for checking emails and messages. Communicate these hours to clients and colleagues so they know when to expect your replies. Nights and weekends? Reserved for downtime unless it’s an emergency. Make sure to hold yourself to these boundaries, too.
Embrace Do Not Disturb
The DND button is your new best friend. Use it to silence notifications during me-time or when you need to dive into some focused work. Trust me, those notifications can wait.
Create Tech-Free Zones
Deligate spots in your space where devices are a no-go. Your bedroom should be a sanctuary for sleep, not a second office. And here’s a crazy idea… how about decide that the dining table is a screen-free zone during meals? If you’re eating with loved ones, give them your undivided attention. If you’re eating alone, open a book instead of scrolling Instagram.
Seek Out Offline Activities
Remember hobbies? Yeahhh, those things that don’t involve screens. Like I mentioned above, try cracking open an actual book, getting out for a walk, or finally cook that new recipe you’ve been wanting to try. Last year I started playing tennis again and am loving it! Put the screen down and recharge your battery in a different way.
Practice Mindfulness
Ever tried meditation or mindfulness? Even a few minutes can make a difference in reducing stress and improving your focus. Apps like Headspace or the Calm app have a ton of guided meditation and are perfect for a quick mental reset. I also love mindfulness journals like the Five Minute Journal (I shared my fave wellness journals in my most recent newsletter, don’t miss the next one and subscribe at the bottom of my site).
Why You Should Unplug
Taking control of your screen time isn’t just about reclaiming your personal time (though that’s a perk). It’s also about leveling up your game as an agent (or becoming even more of a pro at your job, regardless of if it’s in real estate):
Sharper Focus
Less digital clutter means better focus and increased efficiency.
Happier & Healthier
Better sleep, less stress – need I say more? Your well-being directly impacts your ability to perform at work and just your well-being in general.
Stronger Client Relationships
Setting boundaries shows you respect your time and theirs. They’ll appreciate your availability during designated hours and respect you as a pro who’s got their shit together.
Increased Creativity
Disconnecting lets your mind wander and explore new ideas. Who knows? Your next great idea could spark during your tech-free downtime.
The Gist
As real estate agents, being plugged in is a must for success, but finding your balance with technology is essential for your overall well-being. It’s not about ditching all of your screens – it’s about using them in a healthier (and just smarter tbh) way. Try out a few of these strategies and I’m telling you, it’s a game-changer.
